Anadolukavağı is a neighbourhood located in the municipality and district of Beykoz within the Istanbul Province, situated at the northern end of the Bosphorus. The name combines "Anadolu" for Anatolia and "kavak," which meant "control post" in Ottoman Turkish, highlighting the strategic military importance of its location directly across from Rumeli Kavağı on the European shore.
Originally known in ancient times as Hieron, the settlement served as an important outpost and fortification for both the Romans and the Byzantines. While some historical accounts suggest the location served as a refuge where trade ships could shelter from fierce storms, other claims indicate that in the past, certain villagers acted as wreckers by lighting fires to disorient ships, grounding them in the narrow strait to seize their cargo.
The most prominent historic structure on the hill above the neighbourhood is the ruinous Yoros Castle, an old fortress dating from the Eastern Roman era that stands overlooking the meeting point of the Marmara Sea and the Black Sea. From the walls of the fortress, visitors can enjoy fine views toward the Third Bosphorus Bridge and the Black Sea. Additional historic architecture in the village includes a small mosque commissioned by Ali Pasha of Midilli in 1593 and a historical fountain commissioned by Cevriye Hatun in 1785.
Once functioning primarily as a quiet fishing village, Anadolu Kavağı maintains its village atmosphere while operating as a major tourist destination. Although permanent residents number around 1,500, supplemented by military personnel at surrounding bases, the village attracts crowds far exceeding its resident population during the summer months due to its fish restaurants and snack kiosks.
The village is also widely known as the birthplace of Mareşal Fevzi Çakmak, a prominent military figure who served as a general for the Ottoman Empire, the Ankara Government, and the Republic of Turkey.
Visitors today can reach Anadolu Kavağı by both land and sea. Transportation options include hourly bus services operating from Üsküdar and connecting lines passing through Ortaçeşme, as well as regular Şehir Hatları ferry sailings departing from Üsküdar, Eminönü, and Sarıyer.
